Since it is now 2010 and we each have a book, I thought I would create a blog that we can start sharing our reading.
I know that we are all reading scriptures, conference talks as well so feel free to share any thoughts and feelings that you have with those readings as well.
I haven't read a lot of Paradise Lost yet but do find it interesting that Milton has a pretty good grasp on the pre existence and the war in heaven. He understands Satan and what happened as a third of the hosts of heaven were cast out. He also understands that Lucifer and his followers are on earth working to tempt each of us.
Happy New Year

This is a good idea, thanks for setting it up. I read Paradise Lost in high school over 40 years ago. Need to read it again. I have downloaded it in MS reader format for my PDA and it is on the list to read. I am currently reading Observations upon the Prophecies of Daniel, and the Apocalypse of St. John by Isaac Newton and The Astronomy of the Bible by E. Walter Maunder. They are both very interesting, give you quite a different perspective of things. Newton wrote quite a few books and papers about the Bible. Maunder is an astromomer and wanted to write a book about the astromomy of the Bible as no one else had covered that subject from that point of view. Astronomy is one of my hobbies so it was a good choice. I will post more as I get further into them.
ReplyDeleteAstronomy of the Bible is a very interesting read. It uses history as seen from the Bible to define things like the calendar and the why and when of the holidays. This was a very informative book and a fun read for me as I am very interested in astronomy. I took a few astronomy classes in college and gave lectures in a planetarium. This would be a good book to read even if you are not into astronomy as it explains a lot about the very early Hebrew history and backs it up with writings form the Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans of the time. It gave me a better understanding of many of the things that happened in the Bible. I now have a better understand of the time frames involved in events and how the Hebrews defined the days, months and years. They don't translate 1 to 1 to the modern day equivalents and that will change your understanding of events a great deal. I highly recommend this book. Don't worry about it being too scientific for you though, it is written in such a way that everyone should be able to enjoy and understand it.
